Joeys Overview Print

Age: 6 to 8

Skills learnt: teamwork, nature skills, interactions with others, love for other living creatures, creative and artistic skills.

Joey Scouts are the youngest bunch of the Scouting Movement. Boys and girls get their first taste of nature, forming friendships outside of school and learning to deal with challenges. They learn this through adventures, craft making, taking fun trips and participating in group activities. They also learn the importance of achieving their goals by earning badges through challenges.

Joey Scouts are formed into a Mob of about 20 kids supervised and guided by a minimum of two trained Joey Scout Leaders (18 +), at least one of which is female if there are girls. The Mob is sometimes broken up into smaller groups as there is no rigid structure like the other sections. There are also Joey Scout Helpers, who sometimes assist the leaders. These helpers must be over 15 years.

Leaders are not referred to as Mr or Mrs, but names from the friends of the forest in the Australian bush or Aboriginal names, for example Brolga, Bilby and Wombat.
