Visit from Olympic Great - Ian Thorpe |
You never know who might call into BPP ! Australia’s largest Scout group received a visit during August from Australia’s biggest fish - Olympian great Ian Thorpe. A big black limo rolled-up to the hall early one Saturday morning and out stepped one of the world’s most recognisable faces. The ‘Thorpedo’ mixed with a group of BPP joeys, cubs, scouts and venturers for more than an hour at the Humphries Road hall. He lived up to his reputation of being able to relate well to children, as he crowded into a canoe with them and took a stroll through the adjacent bushland reserve Ian is an ambassador for Storm Sustainability, a company that works with Scouts Australia to improve the energy and water efficiency of scout halls across the country. BPP is Scouts Australia’s pilot project for solar energy generation. A bank of panels on the Humphries Road roof have been spinning our electricity meter backwards since Christmas. To see our green energy generation at work (though not at night understandably !) visit this web link.

Reaching the Top of the Scouting Ladder |
It's always a great occasion to see new names added to our honour boards around the Humphries Road hall, and on March 18th our latest Australian Scout Medallion recipients, Sam Beadle and Carlea Ould, joined the 'hall of fame'. They have worked tirelessly to achieve the highest level achievement in the Scout section of Scouts Australian. The special ASM badge was awarded by District Commissioner Peter Lee and they will receive their actual medallions later in the year at a presentation by the Branch Commissioner for Scouting. Sam also received recognition for spending 100 nights under canvas as a Scout - quite an achievement to have been camping for almost a third of one year in a four year scouting career. Scouting is all about having fun, but also about 'learning through doing' . The award scheme is designed to test and stretch young people to strive and achieve. We look forward to watching Sam and Carlea move through our Venturer Unit and, perhaps, in another three years gaining their Queens Scout Awards. |

The Ladies Have Landed at Explorers |
Explorers Scout Troop has attracted two very capable female leaders, which means that from Term 3 2010 Explorers can accept female scouts into its ranks. Ex-Venturer, Grace Talbot-Walsh (sister of Scout Lily), and Sandra Sunkel-Lozell (mother of Venturer Jordan and Scout Connor) have joined Richard, Steve, Jarrod and Tim to lead the ever-expanding bunch of mostly 11 and 12 year old boys. Sandra is an outdoors person from years ago (New Zealand style) and is looking forward to getting back into outdoor activity. Richard and Steve have plenty lined up for her in terms 3 and 4 to reintroduce her to the joy of the wilderness ! Grace was a keen member of BPP Venturers for several years before old age caught up with her and she was 'booted' at 18. She will now further refine her Scouting skills with Explorers, while juggling a university course at the same time. Girls wishing to join Explorers Troop (Monday nights) should be keen on outdoor activity and be prepared for hiking and camping on a fairly regular basis. Those interested should contact Group Leader, Tim Bracher, on 9787 0962 (Bus) |

BPP's Solar System Boosts its Green Credentials |
Thanks to the generosity of Storm Sustainability and the Scout Association of Australia (Vic), our electricity meter is now running backwards ! The addition of a 1kw solar system to our Humphries Road hall means that we are one of the greenest scout groups in Australia. The system generates an average of 4-6 kwh of power on most days and often a lot more during those warm summer months. Most nights in the hall consumes about 7-8 kwh, so over a week we're well ahead. You can see the power generation on the data box in the kitchen. The Scout Association will monitor our electricity and water generation over 2010, for possible extension to other halls. Our 'green' credentials are now as follows: - Solar electricity generation
- Water harvesting for use in toilets at both halls
- Weekly recycling of materials
- 'Green' groups restoring/ revegetating the immediate environs at both halls
If you want to join either of the green groups, please contact Ann Scholes on 9787 7228 for the Canadian Bay beach hall green group, or Coralie Davies on 5971 2184 for the Humphries Road green group |
